Armed Subject Who Threatened Tenants in Early Morning Incident Determined to be Felon In Possession of Firearms
Santa Barbara- January 19th, 2017
At approximately 3:15 a.m. this morning, January 19, 2017, Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a male subject armed with a rifle who allegedly threatened a group of tenants at a residence in the 5300 block of Parejo Drive located in an unincorporated area of Santa Barbara County near Goleta. The male suspect was reportedly under the influence of a controlled substance and possibly had access to additional firearms. The tenants fled from the residence but several family members and a caretaker were still inside. As a precautionary measure, an Emergency Notification was sent to residents in the surrounding neighborhood instructing them to shelter in place and one adjacent home was evacuated.
When deputies arrived, the suspect’s parents came out of the residence but the armed suspect, his grandfather and the caretaker remained inside. Due to the potential danger to the residents still inside, the Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Team and Hostage Negotiation Team were deployed. Deputies secured a perimeter and at approximately 5:40 a.m., the suspect came out of the residence and was taken into custody without incident.
35-year-old David Palmer of Santa Barbara was arrested and booked at the Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of making criminal threats, assault with a deadly weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
This afternoon, Sheriff’s detectives served a search warrant at the residence and seized multiple firearms. They also located drug paraphernalia, suspected methamphetamine and two suspicious devices. The Sheriff’s Bomb Squad responded and determined the devices were not hazardous.
Palmer is being held on $500,000 bail. The Sheriff’s Office is requesting the DA’s Office charge the Palmer with additional firearm enhancements.
