School Shooting Threat Under Investigation
Santa Barbara - February 16th, 2016
The Santa Barbara Police Department and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office are working together to actively investigate a school shooting threat made on an anonymous blog/chat room site. The blog entry was discovered by an Ohio resident who then notified Santa Barbara High School. The school principal immediately contacted the Santa Barbara Police Department who then reported the incident to the Santa Barbara Unified School District.
In the blog entry, the individual stated that he/she was considering committing a shooting at a classroom and indicated a warning for Santa Barbara. The name of the site is being withheld at this time due to the active investigation. Law enforcement takes all threats seriously and is actively working to identify the source. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been contacted.
The Santa Barbara Unified School District (SBUSD) contacted all schools in its district, neighboring districts and colleges in the area. SBUSD also sent notifications to staff and parents through its alert system. Because the threat is non-specific to a particular school, security measures are up to the discretion of each school or school district.
If you have any information that would assist investigators in this case, please contact 911. The Santa Barbara Police Department and Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office want to take this opportunity to remind residents to be vigilant and to report suspicious activity right away whether it be something you see on your phone, computer or in person. Remember always, if you “see something say something”. This case is also a reminder of the need to make sure you are signed up to receive emergency alerts through your school system.
