Goleta - April 3rd, 2017
A suspect believed to be responsible for burglarizing three area churches in Goleta was arrested on Sunday morning, after being confronted by deputies as he fled the scene of his most recent offense.
On the morning of Sunday April 2, 2017, deputies from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office Goleta Valley Patrol Bureau responded to the Unitarian Universalist Live Oak Church in the 800 block of North Fairview Avenue in the city of Goleta on a report that a burglary that had just been interrupted. The witness, an employee of the church, arrived to prepare for Sunday services when they were confronted by the suspect, Joseph Rose, formerly of Boston, Massachusetts. Rose fled the scene when he was discovered. The witness provided a good physical description of Rose as deputies converged on the area. Rose was located by a sheriff’s sergeant a few blocks from the scene and eventually taken into custody.
Rose was carrying stolen items that implicated him in the crime, and he had injuries to his hands and arms consistent with cuts and scrapes from broken glass. Rose had shattered a window to gain access to the church. Rose also had additional evidence with him suggesting that he had burglarized the nearby Coastline Christian Academy in the 5900 block of Cathedral Oaks Road. This school is associated with the South Coast Church located on the same campus. Patrol deputies continued their investigation there and forced entry was located at that school and additional evidence was found implicating Rose in that burglary.
During the investigation, information was also developed to tie Rose to a recent burglary of the Goleta Valley Church in the 6000 block Stow Canyon Road nearby. In that offense, the suspect had broken a window and was interrupted by a church employee. Rose fled the scene that day and could not be located at that time. The investigation tying Rose to this offense is on-going.
Rose was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on two counts of 459PC – Burglary.
