Fatal Train Vs. Pedestrian Scene in Goleta

Goleta - July 20th, 2017


The Sheriff’s Office is releasing the identity of the pedestrian that was fatally injured by a train in Goleta yesterday, July 20, 2017.  The decedent is 51-year-old Edmund Alexander Backus of Goleta.  Backus was riding his bicycle just after noon on the train tracks near the Goleta Amtrak Station and was wearing headphones when he was struck from behind by a northbound Amtrak passenger train.  The Coroner’s Bureau has determined this death to be the result of an accidentNext of kin has been notified. 

Pedestrian Fatally Injured by Train in Goleta


Goleta- Just after noon today, July 20, 2017, an adult male in his fifties was walking on the tracks near S. La Patera Lane just before the Goleta Amtrak Station when he was struck and fatally injured by an Amtrak passenger train that was headed northbound.  The train engineer observed the subject on the tracks and activated the horn, whistle and braking system but the subject did not respond and was struck by the train. The collision is under investigation but the decedent appears to have been wearing headphones. 

The Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office in the process of making a next of kin notification and is conducting an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.  An official cause and manner of death is pending toxicology and lab results.
